Battlefield Hardline Open Beta Starts February 3rd

It's time to get a piece of the action! Today we are announcing that Battlefield Hardline's open multiplayer beta will be active between February 3 and February 8*. Available to players worldwide on PC via Origin, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, the open beta will give you a small taste of what's in store when the game hits the streets beginning March 17. Battlefield Hardline Beta Trailer – Complete FPS Experience Gameplay

Three Different Maps and Modes

The open beta will let you try out three different multiplayer maps and modes. First off, Hotwire mode brings high-speed chases to the Battlefield, as the criminals attempt to steal a list of marked cars while the cops try to repossess them. Available on two maps in the beta, Downtown and Dust Bowl, success in Hotwire will require excellent teamwork and precision driving.
The desert town of Dust Bowl known for its drug trafficking problems will also be playable on Conquest, the fan favorite Battlefield mode, which takes the battle up to 64 players. Finally, there's the Bank Job map where you'll get to try out Heist mode. The criminals are trying to break into a bank vault, but the cops are doing their best to stop them. Which side of the law will you ride with?

Introducing Hacker Mode

On top of all this, one player on each side can help out their team throughHacker mode. Similar to Commander in Battlefield 4, Hacker mode takes surveillance to the next level as the Hackers can take control over security cameras, spot enemies and specify areas on the Battlefield for their team to attack or defend. Hacker mode will be playable on all modes in the beta.

Exclusive Battlefield 4 Dog Tag**

Battlefield 4 players hitting the Hardline beta will receive an extra perk* for joining the chaotic urban warfare: the Hardline Dog Tag. If you have a Battlefield 4 account and try out the Battlefield Hardline beta the dog tag will be unlocked in the next patch for Battlefield 4 for you to proudly wear in-game. Watch your back - a lot of foes will want to grab this...

Netflix, Preso, Stan stream services to guess what you want to watch

Foxtel Presto video

VIDEO-ON-DEMAND services will deliver a new era of entertainment this year, and one of the biggest battles will be fought over predicting what users want to watch.
In March, American heavyweight Netflix will enter an Australian market already serviced by Presto (Foxtel and Seven West Media), Stan (Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media), and Quickflix.
All players agree assessing users’ past patterns and tastes, and helping them find what to watch from thousands of options will be key to securing this new online audience.
Presto director Shaun James says his service will be using lessons from its previous movie offering and from the use of the Foxtel Go app.

“We’ve learnt a lot in the last nine months about consumer behaviour, about what holds people in there and no doubt we’re going to learn a lot more as we move forward into the launch of TV,” Mr James says.
“One of the things that Foxtel does well and that we will translate and take into Presto is our ability to curate content.”
Mr James compares video-on-demand services to streaming music services that lure customers in with promises of “millions of tracks” but he says that’s only half the story.
“I think consumers can get lost in that and one of the things that we have learnt from a Foxtel perspective is that the way that we curate, the way that we present, the way we introduce content to people is very, very important,” he says. “It’s something we’re continuing to learn about in terms of people’s behaviour.

“Certainly Netflix has developed this thing in multi-territories over multi-years and it’s a very sophisticated algorithm.”
In fact, Netflix’s algorithm is so advanced it almost defies comprehension.
While many services use common terms to describe movies and TV shows, one study cited nearly 80,000 Netflix “micro-genres” which go far beyond standard descriptions to terms such as “period pieces about royalty based on real life”.
Netflix estimates up to three quarters of what people watch on its service is a result of its recommendation system, on which the company spends $150 million a year.
Netflix product innovation vice-president Todd Yellin says without an advanced system, customers would easily get lost.

Netflix on Streaming 4K Video video

“With more and more content comes more and more choice,” Mr Yellin says. “With all these hundreds or thousands of movies and TV shows to choose from we want to make it easy and not burdensome.
“Underneath the hood we drive hard to improve our algorithm. The algorithm uses a massive amount of data about users — what they watch, when they watch, how much stuff they watch, the velocity they watch in, what devices they watch on.”
Using this information, Mr Yellin says, one user’s recommendations in the romance genre might be very different from the next person’s.
Mr Yellin says “only 20 per cent of Netflix members are really into critics” recommendations, with most relying on the service’s software.
Stan chief executive Mike Sneesby says, as a new player, his service will be adding editorial curation as well as software-driven curation.
Mr Sneesby says despite its size, the Netflix recommendation system still has limits.
“I think people expect it to be a lot more magical than it is. At the end of the day, it’s still a computer that acts off data points,” he says.

AS IT looks to expand globally, Netflix’s CEO has spoken about how it plans to make international flavours of the service as strong as the United States’ and what he believes the standard of internet needs to be.
Speaking at Netflix’s Q4 earnings results call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings confirmed his company’s intentions to snap up global rights to TV shows, rather than on a country by country basis.
“[We] had the vision to start to figure out how to get global rights for some of the content by moving up the food chain,” Hastings said.
“And we have been pushing on that dimension, where we can get the global rights and we don’t have to go country by country across 200 countries, but instead can provide the producer upfront money, guaranteed money, and get great access.”
By doing this, Netflix hopes to end people using VPNs and DNS spoofing methods to access the US site in areas like Australia by giving everyone the same content.
It’s not clear how many Australians currently use a backdoor method to access the service, with some believing it is up to 200,000.
A Netflix spokesman told news.com.authat they currently don’t block Australian credit cards in case they are being used by Aussies living in the USA.
Netflix will launch in Australia in March, with what will initially be a lacklustre line-up, missing key shows like Orange is the New Black and Better Call Saul which Foxtel’s Presto and Fairfax/Nine owned Stan have the rights to respectively.
Netflix commissioned “Orange is the New Black” won’t be available at launch.

Away from Netflix specifically, Hastings had some bad news for Aussies, claiming that he believes that when it comes to internet speed “25Mbps is kind of a baseline for the next five years, as opposed to the last five years.”
That’s the same speed that Malcolm Turnbull is promising to deliver as part of the new multi-technology NBN rollout.

Tesla Model S P85D revolutionised driving

Tesla Model S - Official promo video

YOU put your Tesla Model S in the garage last night. Before you went to sleep it did an already insane 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, but when you wake up it does that speed in 3.3 seconds without you doing a thing. Huh?
This morning Tesla Motors issued a software update to their Model S P85D model that will make the car even faster.
Being able to make your car meaningfully faster through an over-the-air update, much like something you would get on your phone is something that has never been done before. But Tesla has never been a company that is scared to try new things.
The company is about to rollout its latest 6.1 firmware update that will add things such as traffic aware cruise control that modifies your speed according to traffic and the ability to have your car automatically set the climate before you get in.
Most car manufacturers don’t even support firmware updates over a wireless mobile connection, but Tesla has been doing it with the Model S for several years now, adding new features and fixing problems.

Tesla’s first software update that significantly updated the car was back in 2012 when features such as hill start assist and an energy saving sleep mode for the car were enabled.
In 2013, several Model S cars caught fire after driving over a metal object at high speed, which punctured the battery pack on the car’s underside. Tesla was able to issue an over-the-air software update to give more ground clearance without having to make a complete recall.
The Model S’s air suspension allows the car to be raised and lowered with one tap.

Late last year, Tesla released another major update that automatically adjusted suspension height based on your location. For example, if you have a driveway that the car might scrape on, the Model S will recognise it’s there and automatically raise its height to get up.
The company even added a ‘creep mode’ feature to allow the car to move like a traditional automatic car over a software update after customers requested it.
Updating your iPhone to the latest version of iOS to get a fancy new interface is one thing, but wirelessly updating your phone to flog some bloke off the lights, fix your suspension or make hill starts easier is something else. It’s the future of the motoring industry and it’s insanely exciting.

AS THE world mourned and confusion reigned after the downing of MH17 over Ukraine, Eliot Higgins went to work.
Armed with his laptop and a list of social media accounts, the 35-year-old citizen journalist combed Facebook and Twitter for sightings of the Buk missile launcher — believed to be responsible for shooting down the jet in July 2014.
Using a combination of ‘open source’ techniques including social media and satellite images, he tracked the movement of the missile launcher in a convoy from Russia into Ukraine, producing “undeniable evidence” it was unloaded in the area three hours before the plane crashed, killing the 298 people on board.
It’s more than most governments and media organisations had managed at the time and is not bad for a former gamer at home on a laptop. But it’s investigations like this that have become the modus operandi for Mr Higgins, now regarded as one of the world’s foremost citizen journalists, with millions of followers from Presidents to major media organisations.

“It’s also a lot more of an entertaining way to spend an evening than TV or sudoku, it’s nice to go to bed feeling you’ve achieved something with your spare time,” Mr Higgins told news.com.au. The former gamer and administrative worker, who lives in the UK town of Leicester, and has a self-described “obsessive” personality said he’s motivated to expose atrocities around the world by interest in the subject and the old-fashioned challenge of seeing what is possible.
“I then find myself in a position where I’m one of the few people who has figured something out, then I feel almost obliged to keep digging, because I know there’s not many other people out there who will,” he said.
It’s an ethos that has seen him expose the use of chemical weapons in Syria and pinpoint the location of US journalist James Foley’s execution. He’s also geolocatedTunisian jihadists and investigated the use of chemical weapons have been used in Donetsk along with if mobile networks were blocked in Hong Kong amid the height of the Occupy Central movement in moves that often challenge the official line of events.

Mr Higgins said as someone who “used the internet a lot” he was initially motivated by the amount of content online that is “generally ignored” by the mainstream media.
“A big part of that was down to not being able to verify videos, so I started to think how that could be done, and taught myself to use satellite map imagery to verify the locations where videos were filmed. From there I started a blog in early 2012, really for myself than any attempt to make it big in anyway, and it grew from there.”
The Brown Moses blog began while Mr Higgins was on holiday in Istanbul with his wife and young daughter as a way of documenting the mass of information being uploaded onto social media on the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime in Syria. His detailed analysis of hundreds of YouTube videos and images saw him quickly sited as a weapons expert by media organisations hungry for news from the region.
But while the work gained him a profile, it didn’t pay the bills. Mr Higgins was about to accept a job that would mean an end to his blogging until a follower suggested he try crowd-funding. A Kickstarter project received more than $96,000 in donations in order to run his own website.

The result is Bellingcat, billed as “by and for citizen investigative journalists” which contains a mix of news, case studies, interviews and how to’s run by a number of contributors. Using simple language and step-by-step instructions Mr Higgins take users through how to geolocate videos and find information using satellite images and social networks.

“I’ve had some offers from media organisations, couple from private intelligence companies, but I prefer to stay independent, especially as the field is developing rapidly, and there’s lots of interest from all sorts of areas,” he said, adding that the level of international reaction continues to surprise him.
“It’s rather like because this happened kind of accidentally I never really expected any sort of reaction, so when that reaction happens I’ve no preconceived notions about what it should be, so I just go with the flow and make the most of the situations that arise,” he said.
For now, the plan is for Bellingcat to create a “global network of open source investigators working in a variety of fields” in order to investigate global events. Mr Higgins said he is also planning to develop tools for other people to investigate and verify events more effectively from anywhere in the world.
He will also start work on an academic textbook teaching people about how to use open source information and start lecturing on the subject.
“As for Bellingcat, we’ve more work on Ukraine planned, including more on MH17, and a look at other aspects of the conflict.”
