‘Harry Potter: Wizards Unite’ Hands-On During Wizarding World Launch Event – There’s a Story, Harry! And a Ton of Content, Too! – TouchArcade

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the upcoming AR game developed by Portkey Games and co-published by WB Games San Francisco and Niantic, Inc. (of Pokemon GO fame), is releasing tomorrow, Friday the 21st, and is hoping to cast a spell on the millions of players who’ve dabbled with Pokemon GOand also bring into the fold the many Harry Potter fanatics across the world. Is it going to succeed? Based on the few hours I got to play the game at the Universal Studios Wizarding World launch event this past Tuesday, I think it will because it brings to your phones a richer universe than Pokemon GO, an actual evolving narrative, better visuals, and an emphasis on collaboration. And although Wizards Unite definitely has more depth thanPokemon GO, its main gameplay loop is similar enough to still be inviting to the casuals, which bodes well for its success.

Valve making Dota Auto Chess mod into standalone game

Dota Auto Chess, the most popular mod in Dota 2 these days (and which has nothing to do with chess), is becoming a standalone game made by Valve themselves. I had not predicted that this would be Valve’s next game. Valve say they talked with mod creators Drodo Studio about working together and, while dreams of collaboration fell flat, they did agree to each work on their own versions of it. Presumably some money is changing hands too? So Valve are now making a standalone Dota Auto Chess while Drodo are continuing to work on the mod as well as their own mobile game that basically just replaces the characters. So that’s a game based on a mod for a game based on a Warcraft 3 mod based on a StarCraft mod.
Valve explain in last night’s blog post that, as they have with other teams and studios before, they flew Drodo Studio out from China to chat about collaborating in some capacity.
“We had great conversations, but we both came to the conclusion that Valve and Drodo could not work directly with each other for a variety of reasons,” Valve say. “We ended up agreeing that we’ll each build our own stand-alone version of the game, and support each other to the fullest.”
Drodo’s standalone is the mobile game Auto Chess, which replaces the Dota heroes with off-brand lookalikes. It’s so similar that Valve are helping Drodo import account progress from the mod to the mobile game.

Xbox and PlayStation gamepad support extends across iOS 13

Xbox and PlayStation gamepad support extends across iOS 13:

During Apple's WWDC 2019 keynote the company showed off so many things even our cut-down version of the event lasts nearly half an hour. One of the reveals was that tvOS 13 will be compatible with PlayStation 4 and Bluetooth-equipped Xbox One controllers -- convenient for both Apple's own Arcade gaming plans and any others with cloud aspirations -- but in case it's unclear, it also extends to iPad and iPhone.

Once iOS 13 rolls out, you'll be able to use these console controllers easily with your device, no workarounds needed. With Apple reportedly spending "hundreds of millions" to get games to be a part of its subscription package, it's good to know that controllers we already generally like and probably have laying around will be able to keep doing their job.

Here's Every New Privacy Feature Apple Announced Today

Here's Every New Privacy Feature Apple Announced Today

Apple has been facing increased criticism of its privacy practices lately and rightfully so. During CES 2019 last year, the company tried trolling visitors of the annual conference—which it famously does not attend—with a brazenly false piece of advertising: a massive outdoor ad declaring “What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

Last week, the Washington Post published the results of one experiment that showed thousands of trackers siphoning data off the iPhone of technology columnist Geoffrey Fowler. “In a single week, I encountered over 5,400 trackers, mostly in apps, not including the incessant Yelp traffic,” he wrote. (Yelp alone was reaching out to grab Fowler’s IP address every five minutes.)

Apple’s big privacy claim was a lie, there’s no other way to put it—even if it did look catchy on the side of a Las Vegas hotel.

President Trump and First Lady attend state banquet at Buckingham Palace

The high-profile female guests at the state banquet in London may have looked glamorous, but their choice of gowns has left us all with one burning question: was there a ban on colour?

The dress code of “white tie” appeared to have been taken quite literally by some members of the British royal family as they joined the Queen in honouring President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s first state visit to the UK at Buckingham Palace.

Kate Middleton was in true princess mode in a frothy white number by Alexander McQueen, the Duchess of Cornwall chose a cream embroidered evening dress by Bruce Oldfield and Queen Elizabeth herself was dressed in a crystal-encrusted white gown by Angela Kelly.

France Becomes The First Country To Ban All Five Pesticides Linked To Bee Deaths - Herbs Info

France Becomes The First Country To Ban All Five Pesticides Linked To Bee Deaths - Herbs Info

In May 2018 the EU banned three of the significant pesticides implicated in the collapse of bee populations. Clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam are now prohibited for use on crops.

However France has gone a step further and set the high bar in the effort to save the bees. Given the importance of pollinators to nature and the survival of the biosphere, this could not happen too soon!

Studies have reported that the neonicotinoid pesticides attack the central nervous system of insects, leading to loss of memory and homing skills, in addition to reduced fertility. Bees that cannot find their way back to the hive quickly die. However the pesticides have also been shown to affect butterflies, birds and other pollinating insects.

Anthem’ players already underwhelmed by its first Cataclysm event

Anthem’ players already underwhelmed by its first Cataclysm event | Engadget

BioWare's loot shooter Anthem has suffered through some significant issues, but many gamers have been holding out hope that the promised "Cataclysm" events may make them forget the rocky start. Details of the first planned Cataclysm were revealed on a Twitch livestream yesterday and the early reaction seems to be underwhelming, as the event doesn't appear to be as game-changing as it was once promised.

Anthem's first Cataclysm is set to take place in mid-July and will last for eight weeks total -- two weeks of "pre-events" and six weeks of the real deal. During that time, players will be able to explore new areas where they can play timed, raid-style events that challenge them to kill as many enemies as possible and complete activities before a timer hits zero. Leaderboards will keep track of the top achievers, and participants will be able to earn currency to purchase war chests filled with loot, including new weapons and armor. The Cataclysm will also include graphical changes that will make it appear the map is experiencing a tropical storm.

While there may be some enjoyment to be found in the first Cataclysm, it's hard to notice that it seems like a far cry from what was initially promised. Cataclysms were supposed to be world-altering events that would change the map forever. Instead, it looks more like a standalone area that will be open for a limited time.

Given that the event, which was supposed to be one of the big draws for Anthem, was pushed back multiple months, gamers seem understandably disappointed in what they have seen so far. There's not even an official start date announced at this point. Maybe once players have a chance to experience the Cataclysm, they will change their minds, but for now, players seem underwhelmed by what they have seen.

Antipode hypersonic jet: New York to London in 11 minutes? | CNN Travel

Antipode hypersonic jet: New York to London in 11 minutes? | CNN Travel: The Antipode -- the newest futuristic plane concept from Charles Bombardier -- would be 12 times faster than the Concorde. So when can we get a test run?

(CNN) — Remember the Skreemr, a concept for a supersonic plane that could travel at Mach 10?
Scratch that, there's now a design for a plane that could cruise from London to New York in 11 minutes, traveling at Mach 24 -- that's 12 times faster than the Concorde!
Charles Bombardier, the industrial designer who came up with both designs, has dubbed this newest concept the Antipode, which he conceived in collaboration with Lunatic Koncepts founder Abhishek Roy. In theory, it could carry up to 10 passengers up to 12,430 miles in under an hour.

What Is A Scramjet?

Basically, turbofan engines — like you would find in every big airliner — are only really efficient up to around Mach 2.5. Ramjets can then take you to around Mach 4, but then they too lose their efficiency.  These engines will have the same inlet and nozzle, with some kind of mechanical system that shifts the airflow between the two portions of the engine as airspeed changes. Whereas a ramjet decelerates incoming air to subsonic speeds, a scramjet is supersonic throughout, allowing for much higher air speeds (no one knows quite how fast, but we’re talking about at least Mach 10).
