Two And A Half Men Stars Seal It With A Kiss [feedly]
If you’ve been glued to your television waiting for Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer to swap some spit on Two and a Half Men (or for Michael Bolton to make a comeback), your wish has been granted.
In a somewhat odd storyline, Walden (Kutcher) and Alan (Cryer) — both of whom are straight — have decided to marry each other so they can raise a kid together, and E! Onlinehas provided a first look at their wedding kiss. (Hopefully someone will give us a look at what happens on their wedding night.)
The show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, says he thought it was “both very funny and heartwarming that these guys would go to such great lengths to get a kid out of the foster system and give him a home. Yes, there’s some subterfuge in doing that, they are gaming the system, but the intention is to give a child a home, and it brings the series back to being about two men teaching a young man to become a man.”
And since every gay wedding needs a fabulous wedding singer, Michael Bolton will be on hand to serenade them with “When a Man Loves a Man,” a sure-to-be cheeky revamp of his signature song.
Jon Cryer admitted to E! that he was initially thrown by the idea of his and Ashton Kutcher’s characters putting a ring on it. “The first time I heard it I said, ‘What?!’ And then I thought, ‘Oh yeah it kind of makes sense, because last season Alan’s wedding fell apart and Ashton’s wedding has fallen apart.’ The writers have a good idea and it opens up a lot of doors.”
Whether those open doors will provide enough room for shark jumping is anyone guess.
The two men take the plunge on the episode airing November 6.

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks out: ‘I’m proud to be gay’ | Macworld [feedly]
Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday published a moving essay in Bloomberg Businessweek in which he publicly announced for the first time that he is gay. Cook is the first CEO of a Fortune 500 company to publicly come out.
Cook is famously private and said he doesn’t think of himself as an activist, but decided to speak out to help others.
“If hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy,” Cook wrote.
As a company, Apple is firmly in support of marriage equality and has opposed legislation considered discriminatory toward the LBGTQ community. The company supports workplace equality legislation in its home state of California and earlier this year took a stand against Arizona legislation that would have allowed businesses to refuse service on the basis of religion. Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel said in a video accompanying the editorial that Apple’s board of directors supported Cook’s decision to publicly announce that he’s gay.
Cook said privacy remains important to him and that he will “continue to spend virtually of my waking time focused on being the best CEO I can be.”
Apple CEO Tim Cook Says “I’m Proud To Be Gay” [feedly]
Following months of hopeful speculation, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple and thus, one of the most important men in the world, has publicly come out as a gay man. Cook acknowledged his orientation publicly in an exceptionally powerful essay for Businessweek in which he writes:
While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.
Cook, 53, says that he was already out privately and many of his Apple colleagues were also aware that he is a gay man.
Although he writes that he doesn’t consider himself an activist, Cook has been a longtime supporter of LGBT rights and was opposed to California’s discriminatory Proposition 8. Earlier this week, Cook visited his home state of Alabama and publicly chided Gov. Robert Bentley for his appalling stance on marriage equality.
Cook writes that his decision to come out to the world wasn’t an easy one, saying:
Privacy remains important to me, and I’d like to hold on to a small amount of it. I’ve made Apple my life’s work, and I will continue to spend virtually all of my waking time focused on being the best CEO I can be. That’s what our employees deserve—and our customers, developers, shareholders, and supplier partners deserve it, too. Part of social progress is understanding that a person is not defined only by one’s sexuality, race, or gender. I’m an engineer, an uncle, a nature lover, a fitness nut, a son of the South, a sports fanatic, and many other things. I hope that people will respect my desire to focus on the things I’m best suited for and the work that brings me joy.
Words of support from Cook’s peers and friends came quickly, including this tweet from Richard Branson:

Killer JalapeƱo Hummus | FatFree Vegan Kitchen [feedly]
Killer JalapeƱo Hummus
This creamy hummus has a killer kick, thanks to fresh jalapeƱo, and a wicked green color thanks to baby kale. Make it as hot as you dare by using a whole pepper, seeds and all. For the more timid, seed the pepper and use only half, adding more to taste. BEWARE: This hummus looks a lot like guacamole, so if you bring it to a party, be sure to label it as super spicy; you wouldn’t want to actually kill anyone!
Ingredients
- 2 cups freshly cooked chickpeas, drained (see Notes below)
- 1 packed cup baby kale or spinach (about 1.5 ounces)
- 1/3 cup cooking liquid, water, or vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon tahini or toasted sesame seeds
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1/2 to 1 jalapeno chiles, stemmed, seeded if desired
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon chili powder (combination of chiles, cumin, and other seasonings)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- Optional Garnish: black sesame seeds or chopped jalapeƱo
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into blender or food processor and process until smooth. If the hummus is too thick, add liquid by the tablespoon and continue blending. Taste and add more jalapeƱos, chili powder, and salt if needed. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Garnish with chopped jalapeƱo or black sesame seeds.
Notes
I’ve come to appreciate just how much more creamy and delicious hummus is when it’s made with freshly cooked dried chickpeas. I use my Instant Pot to pressure cook rinsed garbanzos for 35 minutes at high pressure and allow the pressure to come down naturally for 10 minutes. Then I make the hummus while the beans are still warm, adding a little extra liquid because hummus prepared from hot beans will thicken as it cools. You can, of course, use canned chickpeas. Just adjust the salt to taste because canned chickpeas are usually salted.

Up, up and away! Jetpacks coming soon | News.com.au [feedly]
PLENTY of people grow up dreaming of their own jetpack. Glenn Martin actually built one.
Sixteen years and 12 prototypes later, the New Zealander reckons his flying machine is all but ready for public use.
His company, Martin Aircraft, hopes to raise $25 million in a November listing on the Australian Stock Exchange.
The first orders are expected to be penned next year, with the first models zooming around the skies within two years.
But at an estimated $215,000 a pop, they won’t be for the man in the street.
Instead, they’re designed for the “first responder” market: paramedics, firefighters, border patrol.
“We’ve had paramedics who’ve come to us and said they work in large cities, and when there’s an accident they have trouble getting there because traffic’s so bad,” Mr Martin said.
“The advantage of this is that it can land in very small spaces — much smaller than a helicopter can land in — right beside an accident.” The company has had a “deluge” of inquiries from companies, governments, and even the odd millionaire playboy, Mr Martin says. He declined to name names, but said 80 per cent of inquiries were from the US.
The latest prototype is less of a jetpack than a personal rotor copter.
Its carbon-fibre frame houses a two-litre, 200-horsepower petrol engine, which powers two large rotors positioned either side of the standing pilot.
It can carry 120kg and fly at up to 74km/h for 30 minutes at altitudes of 1000m. The pilot navigates via two joysticks positioned next to each hand.
Mr Martin, who formerly worked in pharmaceuticals, says he dreamt of his own jetpack from an early age.
“I was brought up in the 1960s, saw the space program, always wanted a jetpack, saw jetpacks on The Jetsons, Lost in Space, Thunderbirds,” he said.
“But a few years later I found that I was 21, at university, and there were no jetpacks.
“After a night drinking at a pub with a few mates, complaining, I decided to go away and research it.” To his dismay, the rocket-based technology at the time would fly jetpacks for less than 30 seconds — and a pilot had to weigh less than 70kg.
“I’m 100kg and wanted to fly longer than 26 seconds.” By 1998 he’d built a prototype in his garage and was confident it could lift a human off the ground.
So he strapped his wife to it.
It worked, and he gave up his day job.
By 2004, after a couple more prototypes, a New Zealand venture capitalist firm agreed to pour several million dollars into the project.
Today, the firm has 17 employees, and has attracted interest from the likes of Google co-founder Larry Page.
Mr Martin plans to show the aircraft off to potential Australian clients next year.
Before it flies, the craft needs to be cleared by national aviation regulators.
It’s built to fit within the microlight category of craft, which includes the smallest planes and powered paragliders.
Certification will first be sought from the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand, which will smooth its certification in other countries.
A spokesman for the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority said the organisation had met with Mr Martin last year and were aware of the jetpack.
“We’re watching with interest,” he said.
How to Never Be Bored Again: 5 New Secrets From Research [feedly]
What can we do to cure boredom?
The quickest and easiest way is to change your context.
If you’re alone, it’s pretty straightforward: get up, go out, see friends, put yourself in a new situation where you have less control over your environment and things will stimulate you.
But there are a lot of areas where boredom seems tougher to deal with: relationships, work, etc.
Boring Relationship?
In the context of a relationship, stop thinking about you or your partner. Again, change your context. Don’t get dinner or drinks and talk. That relies on you two to be interesting. Go somewhere that’s already fun.
Doing thrilling stuff is the key to a fantastic first date. Roller coasters.Horror movies or suspensefilms.
And if you are just talking, stop playing it so safe. The best questions to ask on a first date are offbeat and fun. It’s better to talk about STD’s and abortions than the weather.
What kills most long-term relationships? A lack of excitement. The research points again and again to how important thrills are:
- What reignited passion in long term marriages? Doing exciting things together.
- Think a pleasant evening is all it takes? Researchers did a 10 week study comparing couples that engaged in “pleasant” activities vs “exciting” activities. Pleasant lost.
- What can improve the sex in a relationship? Try a roller coaster together. Anything that stimulates your central nervous system also gets you going sexually.
- Why would doing anything exciting have such a big effect on a relationship? Because we’re lousy about realizing where our feelings are coming from. Excitement from any source will be associated with the person you’re with, even if they’re not the cause of it.
Bored At Work?
What about at work? Work can be boring and you can’t change the context as much. Very true and this is a serious issue: a boring job can kill you.
The key to fighting boredom at the office is not excitement, it’s finding meaning in what you do. Broadening the definition of what it is you are doing, seeing it as a mission or calling, and feeling you are making a difference can make you happier, more fulfilled and less bored.
What if YOU are boring?
What if you’re boring? People who bore others are often self-indulgent — they just talk about what interests them. We all fall prey to this on occasion.
The best lesson here is from Steven Pressfield’s advice on improving writing: keep in mind that nobody wants to read your stuff. So keep things simple and always have the audience in mind.
What about chores that are undeniably boring?
If you have to do tasks that are boring and there’s no two ways about it, don’t take a break:
You may think that taking a break during an irritating or boring experience will be good for you, but a break actually decreases your ability to adapt, making the experience seem worse when you have to return to it. When cleaning your house or doing your taxes, the trick is to stick with it until you are done.
What about when other people are boring you?
At least in some situations, don’t be afraid to let your mind wander. Especially on the phone, research shows that people actually like us better when we’re distracted: we’re less negative, less complex and more personal in our speech. We also encourage the other person to talk more.

The meticulous process of making a Japanese wooden doll is impressive [feedly]
I'm not exaggerating the tiniest bit when I say I want to fly to Japan right now and park myself right in front of this man's hand made wooden doll shop in Japan and just watch him work. Imagine the earnest smell of the woodworking, the sound of the lathe spinning and the beauty of his concentration in making art.
I think growing up is when you start to become more interested in the process of making things than the actual thing itself (especially toys).

Cisco and friends chase WiFi's searing speeds with new cable standard [feedly]
Cat 5e and Cat 6 are bottlenecks for WLAN access points
Cisco is buddying up with three semiconductor companies to push Cat 5e and Cat 6 connections beyond the gigabit mark, to bring the Ethernet world into line with speeds on the table from future WiFi network standards.
The Borg, along with Freescale, Xilinx and Aquantia, has looked at enterprise cabling and found it wanting: while wireless vendors are gearing up to ship 802.11ac Wave 2 products that could crank access up into the multi-Gbps range, the cables connecting those access points can't keep up.
Hence Nbase-T (alliance page here): its target is to create technologies that will ship data at 5 Gbps over Ethernet's standard distance of 100 metres, while maintaining power-over-Ethernet to power the access points. The partners also propose auto-negotiation of lower speeds – 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, and 100 Mbps – if necessary.
Cisco says the alliance will also work on interoperability, as well as working with standards bodies to set down the speed increments NBase-T will use. ®

Vale Gough Whitlam - Gay News Network
LAST UPDATED // TUESDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2014 12:48WRITTEN BY // Robert French
Robert French reflects on the life and legacy of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, a champion for equality and homosexual law reform.
Sometime in the early 1950’s, not long after his election to the Federal Parliament, Gough Whitlam was approached by a young man worried about having been called-up for, the then post-war compulsory scheme of, National Service. The young man was homosexual, and he was worried about the oppression he might suffer.
Whitlam, who at the time shared an office in old Parliament House with an old conservative ALP member, sensitively arranged for the man to come and meet with him when his parliamentary colleague was absent. After the meeting, Whitlam quietly arranged with authorities that the young man receive an exemption from Service.
The story, told to me by Mr Whitlam in his Sydney office when I was a Director of the National Archives, illustrates several aspects of the man – his sensitivity to personal issues of a constituent, his awareness of the consequences of discrimination and his determination to do something about it.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn that Gough Whitlam, when he finally became leader of the Labor Party, championed, among other issues, the decriminalisation of homosexuality (even though it was a State issue) and an end to discrimination against lesbians and gay men, particularly in employment.

Hendo Hover: the world's first real hoverboard? [feedly]
http://www.gizmag.com/hendo-hoverboard-prototype/34352/
Despite many efforts to make the hoverboard a reality in the more than two decades since Marty McFly zipped around on his wheel-less ride in Back to the Future Part II, we're still waiting. Does the new Hendo Board, whose creators claim it is the "world's first real hoverboard," signal that the wait may finally be over?
Unfortunately, no. While the Hendo Board does indeed hover, and without the high-speed fans employed on the Hoverskater, it relies on technology similar to that found in maglev trains, with opposing magnetic forces between the board and the surface providing the hovering capabilities. Specifically, the Hendo Hover uses proprietary Magnetic Field Architecture (MFA) in four "hover engines" mounted under the board to enable it to float an inch off the ground with a rider on board.
While it's intended the rider will provide propulsion in the usual skateboarding manner, the system used to stabilize the 100-lb (45-kg) Hendo Hover can also be used to drive the board forward by altering the forces projected on the surface below.
The use of magnetism means that rather than riding over pavement, the board is currently restricted to levitating over a surface made of a non-ferromagnetic conductor, such as copper or aluminum. This is why you’ll notice the ramp used in the video below is not of your typical backyard plywood design. Additionally, the batteries in the current prototype are only good for less than 10 minutes of hover time. It's also very loud.
Despite these shortcomings, the Hendo Hover has achieved at least one of the main aims of husband and wife inventor team Greg and Jill Henderson, which isn't primarily to create a hoverboard. Rather it's intended to draw attention to and demonstrate the technology behind it, which the Henderson's believe could eventually be used to make buildings better able to withstand earthquakes or floods by floating them out of harm's way.
To this end, the team's Kickstarter campaign not only offers backers a Hendo Hover, but also a Whitebox Developer Kit designed to get the technology into the hands of the people, who after taking apart and playing with the engines, may find other uses or applications for it.
The kit packs scaled-down versions of the four hover engines found on the board into a white box that can be can be steered left, right, forward and back, and rotated around its own axis via an iOS or Android mobile device. The box comes with a hover surface and is powered by a set of rechargeable LiPo batteries that give 12 to 15 minutes of hover from a two-hour charge.
The Henderson's are well on the way to achieving their campaign goal of US$250,000, which will go towards finalizing the Hendo Board design, putting it into production and creating places to ride it. The Whitebox developer kit can be had for a pledge of $299, while the Hendo Hoverboard sits at the $10,000 pledge level. However, only 10 prototype boards were on offer and all have already been snapped up. If all goes to plan, the Whitebox developer kit will be shipped to backers from July 2015, with the Hendo Hovers slated for delivery in October 2015.

Kinect Adapter for Windows makes Xbox One device a USB joint - SlashGear
http://www.slashgear.com/kinect-adapter-for-windows-makes-xbox-one-device-a-usb-joint-22351946/
The newest way Microsoft is making Kinect more accessible to the masses is with a device called the Kinect Adapter for Windows. This device allows the Xbox One Kinect to work with your Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 device with a simple USB plug. You’ll need USB 3.0 - which your computer almost certainly has - but besides that it’s just a simple slot. Need a use for that camera that came with your Xbox One? Surprise! Now you have one!
Not that the Kinect for Xbox One was useless before - absolutely not. You can speak with it. You can let it log you in automatically. You can play a variety of free games from Microsoft with it - demos, anyway.
But now you’ll have the option of using that Kinect for Xbox One with your Windows machine as well. Purchasing the Kinect for Xbox One sensor along with the adapter, says Microsoft, "brings it to price parity with the existing Kinect for Windows v2 sensor." Smart of them to do that, yes?
• You can also use this adapter as a spare power supply for the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor.
• You can also use this adapter to connect your Kinect for Xbox One to your Windows 8 or 8.1 tablet - Surface tablet included.
This adapter is $49.99 and will be launched inside the United States in the Microsoft Store immediately if not soon. This device will be available in over 24 markets as soon as later today and will be out in 41 countries in the next several weeks.
